Does your MacBook display need protection?

If you are an Apple user, you might already be having screen protectors on your iPhone or iPad. But does your MacBook display need protection as well? Let’s find out.

Apple designs MacBook displays in two different ways depending on the specific models they are used in. Some MacBooks (usually the ones with non-retina displays, such as the Mid-2012 non-retina MacBook Pro) have a glass panel above the actual display, which acts as a protective layer for the LCD. If any scratches fall on the glass surface, you can simply replace the protective glass over the LCD at a minimal cost.

On the other hand, the latest MacBook models with retina display are usually designed in such a way that there is no protective glass over the LCD. This integrated design reduces glare while making the display more vibrant, with higher contrast and wider viewing angles. But at the same time, it’s more vulnerable to direct damage. Any scratches on the screen would directly affect the LCD.

Depending on your Mac model, you may or may not prefer to use an external screen protector for it. Usually, Macs that have an additional layer of glass over the LCD does not require protection. But if your model uses a direct display panel without any protective glass layer, you may consider using a screen protector to prevent accidental damage on the LCD, though the display material is generally resistant to scratches caused by day to day usage.

Types of Screen Protectors

There are two types of screen protectors available for Mac displays — glossy and matte-finish. Glossy screen protectors usually do not affect the clarity of the display. But due to their high reflective nature, viewing experience might be hindered if the surrounding lighting conditions are bright. Also, any significant scratches falling on the protector’s surface may be clearly visible. On the other hand, matte-finish screen protectors are comparatively more resistant to scratches and reduce reflection of surrounding objects on the screen. Hence, it provides a better viewing experience under bright lighting conditions.

Note: To ensure proper installation of screen protectors, it should be performed in (preferably) dust-free environments. This ensures that there are no dust particles or air bubbles sandwiched between the surface of the display and that of its own.
